Auf ihrem Debüt-Album “MODERN ADDICTION” beleuchtet das Londoner Duo TENDER mit verführerischen, dunklen Electronic-Pop die düsteren Realitäten einer verblassenden Liebe. Sie werfen einen zeitkritischen Blick auf die unstillbare Sehnsucht sich das Gefühl der Liebe zu bewahren. Mit ausgefeilten Synthie- und Percussion-Sounds und den herzzerreißenden vocals von James Cullen schaffen sie ein verträumtes und romantisches Album zwischen moderner Kühle und leidenschaftlicher Emotion.

TENDER

James Cullen und Dan Cobb sind Tender. 2015 gegründet, teilten sie sich erst eine Wohnung und bald schon das musikalische Projekt „Tender“. Als Kontrapunkt zu den künstlich designten Pop-Bands dieser Tage verstehen sie sich als DIY-Projekt. Durch die räumliche Nähe war es einfach sich schnell ein solides Repertoire zu erarbeiten und sich auf die Ausdrucksformen des Gegenübers einzulassen. Die ersten Schritte waren spielend einfach. Der selbstveröffentlichte Song „Armour“ landete nach ein paar Stunden auf der Titelseite von Reddit und auf ihrem Soundcloud-Account stand der Zähler in 100.000er Schritten nicht mehr still. Inzwischen zählen Tender mit einer Handvoll Songs über 10 Millionen Plays auf Soundcloud, Spotify und YouTube. Dieses ohne ein Album veröffentlicht zu haben.

Tender stehen für den Kontrast zwischen moderner Kühle und leidenschaftlicher Emotion. Auf der einen Seite stehen die ausgefeilten Synthie-Sounds, die Dan Cobb mit Percussion-Sounds anreichert. Dem gegenüber stehen die Texte und der Gesang des Multiinstrumentalisten James Cullen, der tiefe Gefühle thematisiert. So erzeugen sie zwischen den Polen ein Spannungsfeld, das die Songs elektrisch auflädt.

MODERN ADDICTION

Auf ihrem Debüt-Album “Modern Addiction” erlaubt sich das Londoner Duo einen zeitkritischen Blick auf die unstillbare Sehnsucht sich das Gefühl der Liebe zu bewahren. Ganz gleich wie hoffnungsvoll oder hoffnungslos sich dies von Fall zu Fall gestaltet. Sie betrachten in den 12 Songs des Albums dabei unterschiedlichste Perspektiven, setzen sich mit dem innewohnenden Trost der Liebe und dem Zwang der Abhängigkeit nach Liebe auseinander.

Die Wirkung der Liebe vergleichen sie dabei mit den Symptomen einer Abhängigkeitserkrankung. Beschreiben die intensive Annäherung zweiter Menschen, das Zerbrechen eines gemeinsamen Erlebens, den persönlichen Heilungsprozess. Spannen den Bogen von dem Moment eines Orgasmus hin zum Augenblick des Erlöschens aller Leidenschaft. Lauschen der großen Stille danach.

Cullen konfrontiert uns mit vertrauten Gefühlen, aber gleichzeitig untergräbt er ihre Anwesenheit, so dass der Zuhörer mit dem gleichen leeren Herzen zurückbleibt das ihn durch seine (Liebes) Sucht führt. Cobbs hochfliegende Synthesizer und die progressive Percussion werden durch den eleganten Mix des Albums auf Hochglanz gebracht und die Gegenüberstellung mit Cullens Texten ist herzzerreißend.

Auch wenn sich „Modern Addiction’’ oft mit den düsteren Realitäten einer verblassenden Liebe beschäftigt, stellt sich nach mehrmaligem Hören doch ein Gefühl von Optimismus ein. Es ist die Erleichterung, die sich breitmacht wenn man das Tal durchschritten hat. So geht es am Ende auch in „Nadir“ darum, jemanden auf eine andere Art als bislang zu lieben. Cullen sagt: . “Because it isn’t how it was in the beginning, doesn’t mean it’s not real.” In "Nadir" geht es aber hauptsächlich um den Schaden den die Psyche erleitet, wenn an einer Beziehung festgehalten wird, die eigentich emotional bereits beendet ist. Im Video werden die Höhen und Tiefen der romantischen Verstrickung tänzerisch umgesetzt. Der Regisseur meint dazu: „Tender wanted to take the direction of a fragmented and collapsing relationship with this one. I decided to touch on the different dynamics which a relationship can hold. Beyond “happiness” and “sadness”, there are times when two people are just on different paths. No matter the effort they put in, something else is putting them off-kilter and out-of-synch. Call it bad timing, differences, whatever. People also become desensitized to one another, almost reaching slumber, unaware and oblivious to the other’s feelings. The energy of ‘Nadir’ screams dance to me, so I thought it would be interesting to express these dynamics through contemporary dance.”

Ihr Album erscheint auf Partisan Records, deren musikalische Bandbreite bisher Künstler wie Cigarettes After Sex, Torres und The Black Angels hervorbrachte.

Track by Track - Modern Addiction

Illuminate - The idea of being controlled by a stronger individual and having the strength to refuse and make your own decisions. Also looking at why the dominant force may be like they are and what has happened to them in the past, and the refusal to see it themselves.

Kora (Nadir) - Name means ‘the lowest or most unsuccessful point in a situation’. Song is about being in a unchanging and static relationship at its worst and the process of freeing yourself from that. Not in the form of bitterness or falling out of love but purely the natural decline and loving an a person in a different way.

Hypnotised - About distance in a relationship. Also about how one person wants nothing but seclusion and the other full submersion. in a simple way for example someone living away from the city and the other in the city. The constant coming and going, back and forth and pushing and pulling wearing down both sides. Hard to explain really.

Crawl - Equally loving and hating someone. Endlessly crawling back to them despite the way you are treated and the constant lack of respect. Knowing full well how it is, you don’t care and do it anyways.

Erode - About healing and the work that goes into it. loving someone wears you down and takes parts of yourself away. Its about understanding this and allowing yourself to change to succeed.

Silence - About talking and communicating. How even the strongest of partnerships can deteriorate without simply talking to one another.

Machine - Obsession with modern technology/media/status. Participation pulling you from reality into an artificial world and in a way being controlled by the powers that be. Turning real feeling things into machines to serve a purpose.

Sickness - There’s consequence to our actions. Sickness is about how we as a race have learnt to do nothing but take and take without thinking of what may happen as a result. To the point where even our home is crumbling around us but still refusing to make a change. Also saying its not too late to start to make a difference.

Vow - Admitting to someone that all you need in life is them and committing yourself entirely. Blame - Almost an opposite to Crawl, having a poisonous character endlessly attempt to damage

you but having the strength and control to withstand and make the right decision.

Powder - The fear of missing out and going to any lengths to be involved. Deciding whether the permanent inclusion is worth the false and material benefits.

Trouble - A song about naivety and turning a blind eye to what might be right because something feels good even if its brief and not worth it in the long run. Anticipating problems before they happen instead of putting off the consequences.
